This writing assignment involves the research, analysis, and writing on the San Andreas Fault System of California, with focus on the Southern California segment. The San Andreas Fault System (SAFS) is a network of related active faults that occur in California. Here, in Southern California, the SAFS is quite complicated and extensive, being nearly 200 kilometers wide – from the Salton Sea to Catalina Island – comprised of many interconnected, side-by-side, transform fault lines. Your textbook and the various websites listed below will be your primary sources of information.
The assignment topic includes the review and discussion of the tectonic setting of Southern California, the development and evolution of the SAFS, the present day dynamics and activity of the SAFS in So Cal, and the associated seismic hazards and precautions of living on within or near the SAFS. The following parts of this document include information on what topics to address, where to go for research information, how to assemble your research paper, and where and how to submit it. You can earn up to 15 EC points for this assignment.
The primary source of information for completing this assignment, besides your textbook, comes from USGS publications along with other helpful sources listed below. If for some reason you cannot find the needed information from the following online sources, please feel free to search the Internet for additional reliable sources of information. Please list your sources at the end of your assignment document.
B) In full sentences, please respond to the following questions. Your response should answer each question separately.
After reading through our assigned articles this week, has your perception of the way you approach children’s literature changed at all? Why, or why not? Did the readings challenge your ideas about children’s literature in any way? How?
What was the most difficult concept introduced in the readings? What was the most interesting thing you feel you learned? Is there still something you’re not quite sure about?
What were your initial reactions to “The Willful Child” and “Eve’s Various Children?” What interpretations can you begin to make about the two texts?
What beliefs/ideals/standards (ideology) do you see represented in or influencing “The Willful Child” and “Eve’s Various Children?” What power structures does do the two texts uphold? Who does they punish, and who does they reward? What beliefs/behaviors do each text attempt to normalize (and thus keep unquestioned)?
How can “The Willful Child” and “Eve’s Various Children” get us to start think about narratives that deal with children growing and developing more independent identities? Or about finding their place in the world?
Read over the ballot initiative provided on Ballotpedia. Provide two arguments supporting the proposition and two arguments against the proposition. (We will not give points if you copy/paste from the article or include direct quotes; read over the arguments provided and rephrase them in your own words.)
Assume that without Proposition 16 there is no way for college admissions officers to determine the race of applicants (assume they cannot figure out race by name, country of origin etc.). Suppose that college admissions officers have taste-based discrimination against Asian students. How would you have expected Proposition 16 to affect the admission of Asian students at Sacramento University, if it had passed? Answer the same question under the assumption that instead college admissions officers statistically discriminate in favor of Asian students (that is, they assume that the expected GPA for Asian students is higher than for students of other races). Explain your answers.
Suppose that Sacramento University mechanizes the admissions process by designing an algorithm that predicts which students will have high GPAs using four observable characteristics: SAT score, high school GPA, parents’ highest educational attainment, and native English speaker status. Suppose that each of these factors has a positive impact on expected GPA (i.e. native English speakers have higher average GPAs than non-native speakers, students with parents who have PhDs have higher average GPAs than students with parents who didn’t graduate high school, etc.) Under this system colleges will only admit students who are predicted to have a GPA above a certain threshold. Would you expect the racial composition of Sacramento University to be like that of California?1 Why or why not? Do algorithms always remove racial bias in decision-making processes? Refer to another article you read for class in making your argument.
2 pts: first argument in favor of prop 16
2 pts: second argument in favor of prop 16
2 pts: first argument against prop 16
2 pts: second argument against prop 16
2 pts: if taste-based, what happens
2 pts: taste-based explanation
2 pts: if statistical, what happens
2 pts: statistical explanation
2 pts: will Sacramento university race = CA race?
2 pts: why or why not?
2 pts: do algorithms always solve our problems?
1. Explain the issue of bias and implicit bias, and use at least two quotations from the readings on the module pages about media perspective and implicit bias.
2. The purpose of this next question is to help you learn the differnet types of news and to pay attention to and not ignore the publication. Make a list of four examples–one specific news article of each of the four types of news we learned about this week. One of Mainstream News, One of Political Analysis, One of Extreme Bias and One of State News. Choose specific articles, NOT the whole publication. THEN identify after each one, what is the type of news, and what is the perspective of that specific news source, and provide the link to one specific news item from that source. Format this as a list, and just write 1-2 sentences after each one to describe the perspective and purpose of the publication. Finally, explain the differences between mainstream news and more extreme types of news like “Extreme bias” and “State News.” Why do we need to be more careful when reading these two last types?
If you remember, there are eleven different types of media. In Module 3, I created a page for each one of the eleven types of media. I asked you to browse through those different pages, and now in Week 4, I have focused on four of these types. There is a page for each one in Module 4– Credible, Political Analysis, Extreme Bias and State News. These are the types, and if you go into these pages, you will find lists of various publications of each type. You need to use Google and look up examples using the names of the publications.
Example of what you should do:
Fox News (the publication)– mainstream, credible news (the type)– conservative leaning coverage, at times from a Republican perspective (the perspective and purpose)– “Sanders Hits Media, Atlantic” https://video.foxnews.com/v/6190353830001#sp=show-clips (Links to an external site.) (the specific article)
3. Questions for deeper analysis as you view the Walt Disney animation: Ethos, Pathos and Logos– After your analysis of each video, write 3-4 sentences about how each video uses the modes to appeal to ethos, pathos and/or logos.
What are the linguistic mode elements in the video? Make a list. (language, speech, music lyrics, captions) What do they say and how do they enhance the irony of this piece?
What are the visual mode elements in the video? Make a list. (Color scheme, color palette, lighting, style of the video (realistic or cartoon?) What objects do we see in the video? What are the “props” that the little pigs have in their hands? And what do they do with them? How do these objects symbolize each pig?
What are the aural mode elements in this video? There is a LOT to talk about here. The songs, the song structure with verses and a chorus. What is the genre of this song? What musical style are the different singers using? What are the different voices that we hear, how are the different pigs voices used to portray each one differently? What are the sound effects that we hear?
What are the spatial elements in this video? How does the cartoon recreate the scene of a beautiful peaceful countryside where the three pigs live? Notice the different spaces that are portrayed–the pigs outside and then the pigs inside their houses. Notice the various camera angles and movements.
What are the gestural elements in this video? Gestures are body movements that characters make in certain situations, gestures that sometimes have official meaning (like raising your hand in a classroom), other times are more like everyday gestures that mean something because they are familiar to us (like stretching, yawning, dancing, playing a musical instrument, working, building a house). Notice the dancing moves. Lots of them!
