The root of the controversy is a teacher instruc3ng female students to wear burqas as a part of their
public-school geography lessons.
The teacher’s inten3ons were to teach the students about different religions and regions, specifically, a
different perspec3ve on Islam.
I think it does mesh with what we’ve learned about religious literacy, because the teacher took a
completely academic approach to the religion. They were trying to teach about the culture of these
people so the students can have a beLer understanding of who Muslims really are.
Yes, I think the teacher should’ve taught more about Islam if he/she was going to have students come
in dressed in burqas. I did think this seemed like more of just a lesson on “fashion”, like the news
ar3cle said, rather than a lesson on what the meaning of a burqa is and how it plays into their society.
However, we obviously didn’t receive the full story, and most of the informa3on we got was from
angry Texan parents.
Yes, because these children were gaining religious literacy, breaking the paLern of ignorance and
